“What Child is This (Greensleeves)”, Recording and Sheet Music

“What Child Is This (Greensleeves)” performed by the Forest Quartet, Sarah Wallin Huff, violin I, Danielle Rosaria Cummins, violin II, Miguel Cunanan, viola, Ana Maria Maldonado, cello:

This free arrangement of “What Child is This (Greensleeves)” was written in December, 2011. In its entirety, I arranged the piece for string quartet, but different sections can be extracted for various ensembles. For example, the beginning is a duet between violin and viola. The middle section, from pick-up to measure 34 – 81, can be played by two violins, one playing the melody and the other playing a descant part. The first page of Violin 1 contains the entire melody with the exception of the last note which is simply a repetition of the same note found at the bottom of page 1, so this page can be used for a solo performance. The parts are free of bowings, so feel free to add your own articulations. The eighth notes should be off the string.

Non-commercial copying welcome. If you do perform this piece, let me know how it goes in the comment section of the blog! I’d love to hear from you! Peace and joy to you! ~Danielle

    • That would be beautiful! If you get a recording, let me know 🙂 I’d love to hear it. It’s an honor for me that you’d like to play this piece.

    • Hello! This is an arrangement I did for string quartet, but it would make a good piano/violin arrangement too 🙂 I don’t have one now, but it could be created by combining the three lower parts and making it more suited to the piano.

    • That’s awesome! Thank you so much! & if you get a video of the performance that you would like me to share, just let me know. Best wishes!

    • Hi! Thank you so much! Your appreciation means a lot to me and does encourage me to keep it up 🙂

  3. Thank you for the notes! My daughter and friends of her playing two violins, viola and cello would like to play together the song. But I can see the page 2 of “Violin 2” and page 2 of the “Cello” missing. Are they missing actually and is this the full set of notes for the girls quartet to begin playing together? If not, please send the two missing pages for the young ladies to my e-mail. Thank you in advance!

    • Hello! You’re very welcome! I am glad to hear that they are working together on the Greensleeves arrangement 🙂 The pages are all there, it’s just that violin 1 and viola play the entire melody one time by themselves and then the other two instruments join in. I did the arrangement at a time when I only had a very simple notation program, so the violin 2 and cello rests are hand-written in at the beginning of their parts. I would love to hear how it goes with the quartet. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Best wishes, ~Danielle

  4. thank you for this free version! one of my violin students wants to learn it and i think the first page will be simple enough and so beautiful for her to learn! maybe someday we will work on the whole thing 🙂

  5. This is gorgeous! I love that the viola is featured. Thank you for making this available. I am hoping to play it with my middle school quartet at our Christmas concert. Is there a score available?
    Thank you!

    • Thank you so much for the positive feedback! I am so glad you enjoy the quartet and are going to play it! I don’t have a score right now, but I’m including this Greensleeves in a multi-movement string quartet I’m currently writing. Hopefully I’ll have a complete score to post at some point. Be that as it may, thank you for letting me know that you’ll be performing my piece. It is a great feeling for a composer to hear that people are enjoying his or her work. 🙂

  6. My 7-year-old will be playing a portion of this for his upcoming violin recital. I’ve always loved this song, so I’m excited we found the music for him to use! Thank you!

  7. By pure chance I found your arrangement. It is a quite fantastic completion for my student string quartet (aged 11-13) at the christmas concert! A lot of thanks ;-)))
